Claude Code Channels: OpenClaw Killer?
Video summary
Companion notes
Anthropic shipped Claude Code Channels on day one of release, letting you remote-control Claude Code from Telegram or Discord via an MCP plugin — direct overlap with OpenClaw's chat-based agent model.
## What it does The claude-code-channels MCP plugin pipes Telegram and Discord messages straight into a running Claude Code session. Boxmining is running it on a T-Mox box, which means Claude Code stays up 24/7 and behaves like a long-lived agent you can ping from your phone — the same workflow that made OpenClaw popular, but backed by Claude Code's coding stack (Playwright screenshots, refactoring, codebase context).
## Setup is three steps 1. Install bun and a zebra server (setup video linked). 2. Grab a bot token from BotFather and drop the plugin into Claude Code. 3. Enable the plugin and pair once with your Telegram account.
That's it per Boxmining — though he flags that the official MCP Telegram plugin's issues page is already filling up with first-day bug reports, so expect rough edges.
## Where it actually beats OpenClaw For coding, yes. Boxmining explicitly says Claude Code has "much better integration features" and "understands my code base a lot better" than OpenClaw, which is why the Boxmining AI site (boxminingai.com, styled like Windows 95) was built on it. With Channels, he's now skipping the OpenClaw→Claude Code handoff and talking to Claude Code directly from Telegram — "if I can interact with Claude Code directly, why tell someone else to use Claude Code."
## Where OpenClaw still wins Memory and general-assistant tasks. Boxmining: OpenClaw has "a more intense memory system" than Claude Code's context-window-with-compaction approach, and is "optimized to be more of your assistant." If you want reminders, daily-life automation, or non-coding workflows, stay on OpenClaw.
## Roadmap signals Telegram and Discord are the only channels at launch. The Claude Code team is already responding to community asks in the plugin's comments for iMessage, WhatsApp, and more — Boxmining reads this as Anthropic trying to claw back the assistant UX that the original Claude Code/OpenClaw creator took to OpenAI.
